Pullet portraits, 13 weeks, 6 days.

Today we gave away the Golden Buff pullet to our neighbor, so our flock is down to eight. This neighbor had gone in on our original order and ended up with the three survivors from our first shipment in May. One of those chicks (a Buckeye) was never very healthy and ended up dying a few weeks ago, so the Golden Buff is joining her flock to round it out.

Later in the day, our neighbor Bill brought over all of his apple falls for the chickens, which the hens enjoyed heartily. The remaining four chicks/pullets tested the water, so to speak, and poked their heads out into the run.

Chick portraits, 10 weeks and 5 days old

The chicks explored the great outdoors this afternoon! It was their first time down the ladder — they found it slippery. (I closed off the big girls from that part of the run. Pat would love the chance to peck at the chicks.) In the doorway are the Sicilian Buttercup and Golden Buff, the is Buckeye on the ladder, and the Ancona and White Sultan are on the ground.

Two months old today. Golden Buff, Buckeye, and Ancona are on the perch, Sicilian Buttercup is standing on the block, and the White Sultan is on the floor.

Here are the chicks just before bedtime — the Ancona was curious about my phone. The Sicilian Buttercup likes to perch on the roof beam and the other girls peep madly because she’s left them behind. You can see the Buckeye bottom left and Pat, the Andalusian Blue hen, off to the right.

My oats bring all the girls to the yard. In the second photo, from the top: the Buckeye on the perch; the White Sultan, Sicilian Buttercup, and Ancona in the door; and Mamie (Welsummer), Bess (Ameraucana), Pat (Andalusian Blue), and Jackie (Silver-Laced Wyandotte) on the ground. The Golden Buff is somewhere in the coop. (The coop itself is a constant work in progress.)

Chick portraits #7, 6 weeks and 5 days old

Our NATO of chicks and chickens wish you a happy Bastille Day, despite none of them hailing from France. I bribed them with oats to pose for the camera.

The older girls are Spanish (Pat is an an Andalusian Blue), German (Mamie is a Welsummer), and American (Jackie is a Wyandotte and Bess is an Ameraucana — though there’s debate about Ameraucana origins and she could technically be an Easter Egger).
