Because garden space is at a premium this year, today I built a potato tower for starting our spuds. I found the instructions in the Irish Eyes Gaden Seeds catalog; you can find basically the same instructions here from the Washington State Extension (pdf).

I bought the potatoes (All Blue, All Red, and German Butterball) at the farmer’s market last weekend and cut them up today for seed (with two eyes per slice, per the Sunset Western Garden Book of Edibles instructions).

Hunting down good online instructions for this post, I came across contradictory instructions and reports of mixed results — I’ll stick with the extension’s suggestions and let you know how it goes: we’re starting with 2 pounds of seed potatoes.
